HALL HIGH SCHOOL CHORAL DEPARTMENT  2009-2010

The goal of the choral department is to create beautiful music and quality performances by working together, studying and performing music.  To reach these goals the following grading system, procedures, policies and rules apply.

Grades will be determined by four categories

Class participation (50%)

Each singer will receive a daily grade for their attitude, behavior and performance in class.  (Each student receives two free absences)  See attendance policy below.

Individuals achievement including written or vocal test (15%)

Performance of concert music (15%)

Attendance at rehearsals and concerts in proper dress and behavior (20%)

Dress Rehearsals and Concerts Procedures

Only extremely rare and important excuses for absence will be considered, for example, serious

illness or death in the family.   (Work, clubs, meetings, birthdays, etc. are not acceptable)

For any excuse to be valid, two items are essential:

1.  Call choir or send an e-mail and leave a message before the event.

2.  Bring a note from home after the missed event.  Failure to do this will result in an F grade for the concert and possible exclusion from the choir.

If you miss a Dress Rehearsal you may not participate in the concert.  (Only rare exceptions

will be made at Ms. Cetto’s discretion.)

Singers who miss the Dress Rehearsal must come to the concert.

Students who are not adequately prepared for a concert will not be permitted to perform in that concert.

Important Note:  All music, costuming, tickets, and fund raising materials distributed to you are your financial responsibility.  This includes anything left in the choir room.

Tardiness Policy

Students arriving after the bell without a pass will be marked tardy.  Three tardys constitutes an

unexcused absence.

Attendance Policy

Absence from class for any reason after the two free absences will be marked as a 50 score for that day.

Acceptable make-up for such absences are as follows:

1.  Attend a classical concert and write a one page critique of the performance

2.  Listen to a classical recording and write a one page critique of the performance

3.  Sing or play a solo in the class or in a recital (bring in program)

4.  Complete a choir worksheet

5.  Write a one page report on a composer that we singing in class

6.  Participate in a CMEA, ACDA, or other music festival

(All make-up work is due at the end of each term)

Unexcused absence will result in two school detentions.  The second unexcused absence results in a Saturday detention and parent notification.  The third results in an internal suspension.  The fourth unexcused absence results in the student failing the course.  It is your responsibility to present a note authorizing your absence.  Communication is always the best insurance when it comes to schedules and concerts.  The sooner your director knows of a conflict the easier it is too deal with it.  Talk to your director ASAP.
